SATURDAY, APRIL 25th BU Esplanade Clean Up
Come and enjoy the festivities! Hello everybody! I was recently sent some ads for a Summer Program. If you are interested in this program, please contact Grace Lo Hey Unioners! On Saturday, Union underwent a technological revolution. We got a Twitter. You want to check out www.twitter.com/bustudentunion. We’ll post something whenever we’ve got an event coming up, or an initiative that you might want to get involved in. We know that following student government can sometimes seem like a lot of effort when you need to study for class, go to club meetings, and replace your roommate’s pillow with saran wrap and shaving cream. College is busy. We get that. This is a quick and easy way to stay informed with what’s happening at BU, and if you’d like to contribute to our efforts, we’d love to hear from you. So with this, we humbly ask that you follow us, and hope that you find it informative! Enjoy the latest edition of the Union newsletter with a spotlight on the Academic Affairs Committee.
Here is the Academic Affairs Committee Spotlight Powerpoint so that it can be saved for posterity: Please download here. Hey everybody– Just wanted to let everybody know what’s been happening lately with the screensaver ads, because I’ve received some questions recently. I submit new ads every Monday, and there is a limit of five ads per week. Please note that because of this, if you email me an email with an ad on Monday, I won’t be able to get it posted until the next Monday. If you want to maximize the amount of time your ad is up, send it in early– we’ll keep it running for a few weeks unless there are requests for the space that are more time-sensitive. So, a reminder of how to submit these things:
That’s about it! Thank you to all the groups using this this resource, and we’re doing our best to get all of your ads up. Here are some recently submitted ads– check out all of these cool events! Click the ads for full-size images. Thanks, and keep the ads coming! -Paula NOTE: Please do not email any more ads to the personal email address of Paula Griffin. Hey everybody, Below is a link to the letter sent from Dean Elmore to me a few days ago. If the first link doesn’t work, just go to bu.edu/dos and in the upper-right corner is a link to the pdf. I’ll be posting more about the Union’s position on the letter in the days to come as the e-board and other Union members involved with the Med. Amnesty issue meet to discuss the next step. However, let me assure all of you who gave your time and effort to help in petitioning, polling, and spreading the word about this issue to help push it to the higher levels of the administration, that this debate is not over. Whether or not some within the administration disagree with our proposal, the students of BU have clearly spoken. In all cases, an overwhelming majority of students agree that, if a student comes forward to help him/herself or a friend in a medical emergency, they should not be subject to judicial sanctions. This would encourage students who are hesitant in a moment of crisis to turn to BU for help rather than turn away out of fear. Regardless of how the current policy is presented or phrased, the rhetoric is only as meaningful as the reality behind it. Saying that students will “ordinarily” not be punished is not a guarentee, nor a viable incentive for these students, nor even a change from the current status quo. I am thrilled that the administration has stated victims of sexual assault will not be subject to these judicial sanctions, as well as the fact they are trying to be more transparent in their policies. Additionally, I am glad they are having a meeting to review these policies at the end of the year. However, the central issue of medical amnesty has not been resolved. The Student Union represents the students of BU independant of all other factors. Our duty is to you and no one else. Let me stress this – to those who say that the issue is too difficult or the challenge too great, we do not have the option of backing down. As your representatives, we must press our administration on the issues we all feel passionately about. Please examine the letter for yourselves but know that, in the months to come, we have successfully pushed through the sexual assault aspect of our policy, forced the issue to be examined by the entire university, and will not give up this fight despite what challenges may occur. It has not been easy to get to this point, but if I’ve learned anything from this experience, it is that even the toughest goals can be attained if we have the collective will to not be deterred when things get rough. Thank you so much for all your effort and hard work and when it comes to representing your concerns and pushing to make this school a more open, trusting community, your Union will never give up. -Matt Seidel PDF letter link: http://www.bu.edu/dos/documents/LettertoSidelreAlcoholPolicy3.16.09.pdf Alternative: bu.edu/dos – upper-right corner for link Hey!
